The laureate, whose name has not yet been disclosed, is a prominent member of Cuba’s opposition who has faced repeated persecution for his beliefs and his fight for human rights, according to the Polish foreign ministry.

During the visit, Sikorski is also scheduled to meet with members of the Cuban diaspora, the Polish community in Miami, and politicians from both the Republican and Democratic parties.

The Lech Wałęsa Solidarity Prize was established in 2014 as an initiative by Sikorski to honour individuals and organisations promoting democracy and civil liberties worldwide.

After being suspended for several years, it was reinstated last year.

Past recipients include Crimean Tatar leader Mustafa Dzhemilev, Russian activist Zhanna Nemtsova, and Belarusian opposition leader Pavel Latushka, who received the award last year.

The laureate is selected by a committee chaired by former Polish president and Nobel Peace Prize winner Lech Wałęsa, alongside the Polish ministers of foreign affairs, justice and culture, as well as a representative of the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights.

The prize includes a statuette and a financial award of PLN 1 million (EUR 235,000, USD 275,000).
